For heroic scale and poses, AEG's L5R range has quite a few character types. Size wise closer to modern GW aesthetics...

About 4 years ago, there was the most fantastic painting thread on Warseer (yes I went there), from a Scandinavian chap who was putting together just such an army. If you can find it, I'm sure it'll prove inspirational.

Given that I'm working on my own Nippon army I searched the site because I remember seeing the same thread/blog/army a few years back. Seems like it's gone as I can't find it either.

You need to remember that Dixon Samurai come in three designs... early sculpts, Later Sculpts and some by a totally different sculptor. Of particular note are the martial arts monks, which are a different sculptor and which I am using in my army as they are correct for the time period of 1st - 3rd eds.

To my eyes, the Aly Morrisson stuff is THE range to use as it's the most evocative of the period, and of course is about as 'genuine old school' as you can get.

If you buy in bulk from Wargames Foundry, you'll get 22 packs for the cost of 16

Agree with MarkH, I have a couple, well three, small 'Nipponese' armies - Nipponese, Imperial Cathan, and Sea Pirate (basically, Wokou/Malay). The basis of all three of these are Foundry/Citadel figures, and these are absolute classics:

As mentioned elsewhere some of the C range High Elves (also Aly Morrison sculpts from the same era) make decent 'Nipponese' types too.

IMO they don't mix well with the recent Perry Samurai ranges, or most of the Dixon ranges, unfortunately, due to differences in anatomical modelling. The recent Perry figures are probably the most anatomically accurate, but look too 'tall and thin' with small heads compared to the other two. The Dixon figures tend to look too 'short and squat' with massive heads, compared to the others, but this is all a question of taste and all three ranges have some nice figures in them.

I agree as with MarkH and DrM too, the Citadel Ex-Citadel Wargames Foundry models are an excellent range and really fit in the the idea of a Nipponese army. I was never a a fan of the Dixon models, also finding them a little too short and large headed.

I am in the process of assembling a Chaos Nipponese army, on which I have just done an update on my blog this evening :

I have also included some Black Hat Miniatures in the army, which although more Chinese, do seem to fit in well.

Perry miniatures scale very well against the ex-citadel samurai models but like someone else said Dixon models have very different proportions.

Trying to build my own Nippon unit but progress is slow...

I have ordered Japanese warriors from Warlord Games. I hope to combine them into a Nippon army with my older Clan War metal miniatures. You can find my WIP in this blog http://boardgamegeek.com/blogcategory/4215 starting tomorrow.

I wanted a Cathay/Nippon army ever since I visited a convention in Antwerp (Belgium) in 1993 (maybe 1994). They were playing a Warhammer battle on one of the tables with an Oriental Dragon, Ninja's and a big regiment of Chinese bare-chested miniatures on geta's (wooden footwear) armed with knife-axes. I was hooked. :)

Why am I telling this in detail? Well, ever since then I'm trying to find those miniatures. But I'm afraid it were conversions. Does anyone here on the OldHammer forum know which miniatures I'm talking about? The defining features were the wooden clogs and the typical round, pointed Chinese straw hats. :?:
