Fancy a game of Blood Bowl?

I would love to, but I cannot, because I don't own the game. In fact, I've never played the game.

Being a noob and all, what does it take to play the game and which edition is considered proper old-school?

Depends how painful an experience you want - for you! ;)

1st ed - The original. Got a copy for cheap at Vapnartak but haven't played it yet.
Pretty clunky rules with not many touchdowns scored and players stuck in a brawl in the middle of the pitch - or so I've heard.
Paper figures - including a Skaven team that came with a WD if I remember correctly?

2nd ed - I love the background, the minis, the books, the WD articles - but again clunky rules that take ages to play as all rolls are made with D6 and lots of tables.

Great minis and the fantastic Astrogranite pitch (Mighty Fortress not included)!

3rd ed - Great set of rules, available free as the Living rule book, fast play with the block dice and the version I used in my last game.
Not too keen on the YMCA poses of a lot of the newer 90's minis though.
No mixed teams.

Both 2nd and 3rd box sets come with plastic Human and Orc teams if you've got a spare £30-40 on ebay.

Me and Warlord Paul are currently organising a game where we'll be playing 3rd ed. rules but with my 2nd ed mixed team

I have ran several 12 man leagues back in the late nineties I would say 3rd release edition the one with the card board pitch, it absolutely brilliant and there are lots of good citadel journal articles that tie in too, big guys, unofficial star players, etc, We used all rules including journal. Best bit of the game was when you opponent blew the whistle because you hadn't moved your turn marker and was moving miniatures, you had to miss a turn. In the second half of one game I missed about 8 turns against chaos, hehe. I always played the Norse who were a formidable team and won the league twice, the dark elves were always the weakest team.

All teams have changed greatly, including the meta game, since 3rd edition.

The current rule set (BB Competition Rules) is by far the most superior. With it you need no extra rules, it's the full kit.

Thank you guys. So if I understand correctly either 3rd ed. or 6th ed LRB rules are solid. 4th ed. not worthwhile and 1st and 2nd too cumbersome.

As for the miniatures just use what I like right? Probably 2nd ed. mini's as they are from the 80s.

Only problem with using 2nd edt minis is the lack of certain teams and positions. This can often be circumvented, for instance by using dwarf kickers from 2nd as dwarf runners in 3+edt.

If you're going to buy BB buy it now as GW are closing down Specialist Games. I.e. once stock is gone it's gone for good.

@bug16, I know I was thinking the same thing, but a quick look at the availability on ebay reveal some Buy Once auctions for half that price that GW offers.

But wait until the bulk of the sellers find out and prices will quadruple ;) You should see some of the insane asking prices for WFRP v.2 stuff...stuff that you can buy at DriveThruRPG for retail price no less. EBay is a strange place.

Besides the rules, is there a difference in box content between 3rd and 4th edition? The box cover seems to be the same.
