Necromunda returns

I don't like them (surprise surprise). They're chunky and action-figure-esque, but then that's GW's current aesthetic so I guess they had to. I'll admit the old Goliaths (especially the a box plastics) were a a bit off but the new ones look more like pit slavesThe old Escher are some of the most beautiful, finely-sculpted models GW ever produced (in my opinion) and these new ones aren't nearly in the same league (to my eye) so I am still hoping for a rulebook only release. Of course, it's all subjective isn't it!

I'm not 100% sold on them, but they're growing on me. I'm waiting until I see them in the flesh before any final judgement. It doesn't help that I've always hated Goliaths, and like you said, the old Escher are beautiful, and some of my favourite late-period GW models.

Also, you'd be better off buying a box and selling the models off, you'll probably end up with the rulebook for free.

Well, modular plastics designed to be converted aren't ever going to look the same as single piece metals, but you need them that way for Necromunda so you can customise and upgrade your characters as a campaign progresses. The project did start out with a good long chat with Jes Goodwin though, so they have pedigree.

I'm The product manager for the Necromunda release, and I'm as much as an Oldhammerer as anyone on this board, having started the Tales from the Maelstrom blog with Gadge and others back around 2006. I've made the new edition as oldhammer friendly as possible and a couple of people from this very forum have playtested it, so I truly hope it's received in that spirit

Hi Andy. The rules were overdue a modernisation and it seems you were the guy to do it! Nostalgia won't make me pretend there wasn't something lacking in the original set and it looks like you've done a great job on re-imagining it back towards a Confrontation vibe.

Modular figures was always something I thought was missing from the original. Why have a game which relies do heavily on changing and updating equipment and then design models with weapons moulded right across their chests? For that reason I really like the Heresy Miniatures gangers. Lovely fine sculpts in dynamic poses but separate hands and weapon sprues.

I'm indifferent towards the models, don't hate them, don't love them. I'll us my confrontation era gangers and adventureres/mercenaries/pirates.

I am very optimistic concerning the return of cl, int and wp, will be very interesting to see what users they have. Also the

I like that they seem to have toned down the skull spamming on those new bulkheads, that's certainly a very positive thing.

I kinda feel like the campaign should have been included in the main rules and not in a seperate expansion book that they're releasing the same day. Seems like half a game without the campaign...

Probably going to be my first first-hand gw buy since the 90' ;)

Old guys like us of course can and will use the old figs we still have. Or any miniatures we seem fit.
I imagine the new game is pointed at the kids of today and the millenials if you will.
Having a tunnelfighting set up as core rules is quite cool too, making it affordable for anyone and not only kids with cash or compulsive trash-accumulators like many of us here.

It also seems a re-release of the pre-Confrontation Citi Block Floor Plans rules at this point. You can't get more Oldhammer than that!

I was already excited about the new Necromunda, as I missed (skipped for budget reasons) it the first time around, but this just maxed out my excitement meter.

Having seen them in the flesh, I liked the new Goliaths. The old ones, to my mind, were very cartoonish, with muscles like bags of melons. The new ones, while even bigger, are somehow more naturally solid. The weapons are intricately detailed in an appealing way. Escher are nicely done, but because I would want to mix them with older ones, are a bit on the tall side. Maybe they could be cut down a little, e.g. by losing the heels.

I also like the floor tiles - the underhive should have lots of environments, and I think it's good to prompt people to play it somewhere other than on old industrial platforms. My only comment there is that the bulkheads don't stand out that much. I would have preferred it if they were separate bits that sat on top (not 3D but just a separate bit like the 1st Ed. Space Hulk bulkheads), so they were more obvious and could be repositioned, but perhaps they would get knocked around too much.

Turn sequence also looks quite neat. It uses the common two actions per model system, and neatly executed, for example you can spend one to aim and one to fire (for a to-hit bonus), and the special wound and ammo dice are also a neat way to get the same sort of statistical effect with less separate rolls and table checking.

I've got far too many projects on the go already at the moment, so probably won't buy it initially but I might well do in the next year.

Personally, I'm really excited about the new release, but is it true, that the Legacy Gangs will only cover Orlock, Cawdor, Van Saar, and Delaque?
Real shame, if that's true. Would have loved to bring some Scavvies to the field. :(

After much humming and deciding not to bother it was pointed out to me that bits and kits are selling preorders of the rulebook only for £7 so I picked one up. It'll be a nice read even if I do nothing with it.

I have just seen the Warhammer Underworld SHadowspike kits. Id love to see that sort of thing with Munda. Although, frankly, I dont think I will be playing this new one any time soon!

I always hated the old goliath models. especially the plastics. The new ones are WAY better. HOwever, I do love many of the old necromunda sculpts, especially the escher ones, and these new ones look, well, new.

I guess there will be more plastics and Im sure forge world will be all over some new gangs. There shoudl be some pretty fun stuff. My fav gang are the scavvies and plasma van saars so Im hoping ;)

I look forward to seeing some being played, and I do like the models. Im still confused about the card boards though, whats that all about? WHy no towering industrial complex?

I'm liking that idea. Perhaps using the card characters from the Judge Dredd RPG for gangers, the Citi Block Floor plans and Rogue Trader. Get some Oldhammer Hive World Gang action going on.

Imperial Guard inspired gang from the Hiveworld 2-Tinggs Militant Feminist Front, Look, no boob armour or bare midriffs! Aaah! I'm getting all nostalgic!

I'm conflicted about the new squat bounty hunter unveiled for Necromunda.

SquatMini-Feb03-Content24Ado.jpg

On one hand he's absolutely gorgeous, and it's great to see squats in the spotlight; on the other he's a little tall and realistically proportioned to fit in with my hundreds of existing squats...

Agreed. I’ll buy one. And enjoy it. But it won’t fit well with classic squats.

I’m not too troubled though, because even among the classic squats there’s inconsistent proportions.

On the other (other!) hand he fits in perfectly with GW's new Techno-Dwarves, so I'll probably pick some up and do a 'Munda Gang with him as the leader.

I have been playing necromunda down at warhammer world with some of the guys from this forum plus other people.

The game is really great. Some super-unintuitive odd choices but on the whole great fun and flexible, with some of the pain from the original gone. New things like Reloading your guns works really well, as do the actions. I don't mind the "UGOIGO" but it doesnt add or take away anything really, it could still be played in old type turns. Its a shame to see overwatch gone, and the game suffers from it a bit. YOu can get it as a skill now, so therefore making it super powerful. SO yeah ,solid game the fire rules are good, movement is better (5"move). Armour is common now as are multiple wound characters, which is fun, plus the skills seem fun.

The campaign is a bit ropey in places really. The way you make money is only your heavies (champions) and leader. If they get injured you cant make any cash from them for 2 games, and you get ALOT of cash, so missing 2 games means a loss of money. This means playing really defensively with them. Not only do you risk injury or death, but even if you survive you miss loads of cash. I do like having loads of cash though, the old version took you AGES to save up for anything!

Over all good. The books are layed out in a way that is tough to use. 3 books so far and more coming with no index! Good luck finding that rule on the odd obscure situation you are in! Still pretty impressive for a game written in 3 months...erk....

Well enjoyable but certainly not the triple A game I was expecting. A shame really as it had the potential. I fear its the old chimera of GW share holders/management, like "well it wont make any more money if we just rush it out or spend 2 years getting the game right so why bother with playtesting" , which is really really annoying for me. I know Andy and the other writers put alot of thier hearts into it and its a shame it didnt get the time and resources it needed to be a world class game.
